Education Background

  • Ph.D., National Taiwan University (Completed a certificate program of Biotechnology)
  • LL.M., National Chengchi University
  • BE.d., National Taiwan Normal University

Current Positions

  • Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Nutrition, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health
  • Director, Taiwan Yucheng Victims’ Support Association

Dr. Li currently is a Postdoctoral Researcher in Department of Nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (Supervisor: Professor Jorge Chavarro). He was a Postdoctoral Fellow in National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences at National Health Research Institutes, Taiwan. He earned doctoral degree in Environmental Epidemiology from National Taiwan University (Supervisor: Professor Yue-Liang Leon Guo and Professor Pau-Chung Chen ), and also completed the certificate program in Biotechnology in June 2015. During his Ph.D. studies, he advocated policy changes in regard to the health care for the victims in Yucheng who suffered from the accident happened in 1979 in Taiwan. More than 2,000 people were exposed to high concentration of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs). He realized the important role of public policy in shaping the public health care, and thus decided to pursue an LL.M. degree in National Chengchi University, and got then LL.M. degree in July 2015 (Supervisor: Professor Hung-En Liu).

Dr. Li has experience in conducting the epidemiological study, field study, and performing statistical analysis. During his Ph.D. studies, he examined the health effects after exposure to PCBs and PCDFs. The main findings of his PhD study were as follows: 1) the follow-up mortality rate of the Yucheng cohort during the entire 30 years, compared to a neighborhood reference group, had increased deaths from liver diseases, cardiovascular diseases, systemic lupus erythematosus, and neoplasms including stomach cancer and lymphatic and hematopoietic tissue cancer. 2) A meta-analysis of Yucheng and Yusho cohorts showed similar elevated mortality rates from all types of cancer, heart disease, and hepatic disease among exposed men. Furthermore, a new finding of elevated liver cancer mortality in exposed women was identified. 3) Gestational exposure to PCDFs caused adverse asymmetrical hearing effects detectable even in early adulthood.

Currently he is studying how nutritional factors affect reproductive health.
